vital lubrication for the global economy or a threat to strategic national assets?
- Description
A one day conference debating the current and future roles that sovereign wealth funds play in the global economy
- Date
late October 2008
About the event
Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) are becoming increasingly influential within the global economy. In recent years more funds have become active internationally and many new funds have been launched – fuelled often by steep increases in the price of commodities.
SWFs have invested heavily through private equity companies, bought assets directly as well as injecting large amounts of capital into many banks during the recent credit crunch. This has raised their profile considerably and they have started to appear more clearly on the radar of the media, financial institutions and governments.
> Do they represent a threat to strategic national assets?
> Are they a vital lubricant for the global economy?
> How should governments protect national interests whilst encouraging investment?
> What are the investment strategies they pursue?
> Should transparency and governance standards be applied voluntarily or through regulation?
> How is their role in the global economy going to evolve?
These and other issues will be debated in our one day conference providing an overview of SWF structures, strategies and roles with informed insight into their future.
